Eunice Kathleen Waymon was born in 1933 in North Carolina. She took the stage name of Nina Simone and became one of the jazz world's preeminent artists. Her biggest hit was her rendition of "I Loves You, Porgy" from the Gershwin play Porgy and Bess, but she recorded and performed til very late in her life. Nina developed breast cancer and died on April 21, 2003 at her home in France.
Strangely enough, for becoming such an icon in the jazz world Nina was actually a classical musician and used the proceeds from her jazz career to finance her classical education.
As it so happens, the song that I was just listening to was Nina's "It Don't Mean A Thing (If It Ain't Got The Swing)".
I would be remiss, however, and forever lose the lingering smidgen of respect that she still has for me if I didn't include Madame Jazz's favourite "I Loves You, Porgy".
Drink it in my pretties.
Great piece about a great artist!
ReplyDeleteThanks for including "I loves you Porgy" :)
