The Supernatural God Problem

As if there's only one!

The real problem with any of the gods is their chimeric/"nail jello to a wall" ways.  That and the total lack of evidence or reason for their existence.

That's not the problem I'd like to discuss, however.  The problem with gods are that they get to violate the laws of physics or nature.  This places them squarely where their supporters want them to be, beyond examination, criticism or perception.  It seems if you don't actually have to show that your god exists because they're outside space and time and that any questioning of its existence is evil, you can claim anything you want.  Who would've thought?

However, once you accept that your god exists outside of space and time and therefore is not subject to the laws of physics and nature, you're left with the problem that nothing can be known about anything.  The only reason I can be sure that someone has stolen my car is that it was left in a legal and appropriate parking space by me and when I return it's missing.  In a universe with a supernatural god there's no way I can know that my car was taken, or that I have a car, or that I exist.  Even "Cogito Ergo Sum" is meaningless in a universe that can't be defined and has no limits because the supernatural exists.

This would be the point in the argument where all the qualifications and limits that the supernatural has is brought up, but by definition if it's beyond the natural world then no limits or qualifications can be made.  Even the meaningless "can god make a rock so heavy he can't pick it up?" supposed conundrum can only be answered by "anything's possible".  However, if the supernatural exists then you could ask if (insert name here) could make a rock so heavy that they can't pick it up the answer would have to be the same.  If the supernatural exists then there is no way to have any knowledge of anything, any confidence in anything or even trustworthy perception of anything.  It's all off the table.

So, if you believe in the supernatural, even a little bit, like you think some psychics are real or that when we were born has an effect on our personality because of the planets and constellations then you can try to explain to me, and by extension the world, just how it is that in your world anything is possible so how can you be sure that, when something is missing, that it didn't just disassemble and disappear into thin air?  How do you know that it isn't right there in front of you but you can't see or touch it?

You see the problem.  The reason the world makes any sense at all is because it is constrained to existing within the laws of nature.  Because things are consistent you can rely on it, so you know if your car is missing from where you last left it it's because someone's taken it and you can seek assistance.  If things can just disappear good luck getting anyone to help!  Good luck knowing if anyone else exists, or if cars exist!  Just plain good luck.  This is why it's actually better that we don't have supernatural events happening.

So, if you believe that the laws of nature are more like advisories, go ahead and try to make your case, but explain how you know that this blog entry exists and that you've actually replied to it!

I'll wait here...
